Disk I - BATTLE ROYALE I
Not many films can hold your attention like BATTLE ROYALE. Even if you don't like what you see on screen at any particular moment there is no question that you'll want to see what happens next. The film is an original and titillating work of art when it comes to keeping the audience on the edge of their seats. "B.R." is the kind of movie that Hollywood will never make; intelligent, ultra-violent and unflinching in it's portrayal of youth gone wrong and the even more ridiculous knee-jerk reaction of a harsh adult world. In Battle Royale there is only one supreme rule; kill or be killed.
In the near future, the youth have become rampant, rebelling against the adults and causing mayhem. In response, the Japanese government and the school system develop the Battle Royale Act to supposedly keep the kids in check.
In a cliché-ridden film industry, BATTLE ROYALE comes at you like a ticking time bomb of social commentary! Sadistic, ultra violent, and touching. Not many films leave this kind of a crater on the subconscious. The first 20 minutes are brilliant, deftly setting the tone for the dark ride ahead. This is the kind of movie magic that most directors never achieve, and as director Kinji Fukasaku's, the Spielberg of Japan, 61st film, it is arguably his crowning accomplishment.
This box set contains the longest version of the film, the director's cut!
Disk II - BATTLE ROYALE II: REQUIEM (aka. BR II: REVENGE)
It's three years after the events of the original BATTLE ROYALE, and Shuya Nanahara is now an internationally-known terrorist determined to bring down the government. His terrorist group, Wild Seven, stages an attack that levels several buildings in Tokyo on Christmas Day, killing 8000 people.
Exactly one year afterward, the government enacts the "New Century Terrorist Counter - Measure Alternative" program, a.k.a. the BRII act, and sends the forty-two students of Shikanotoride Junior High Class 3-B to hunt Nanahara and his cohorts down in their island stronghold. Shiori Kitano, the daughter of the late headmaster of Nanahara's Battle Royale, signs up for the program, to avenge her father. In order for the government to study the benefits of "teamwork," the new students work in pairs, with their collars electronically linked so that if one of them is killed, the other dies as well.
This box set contains a completely new cut of the film with 18 additional minutes of backstory!
